The University occupies a single site of roughly six square kilometres, laid out between the Makurdi–Gboko Road and the River Benue — about 1.5 kilometres wide and 4 kilometres long. The land slopes gently from the road down towards the river, giving the campus a natural, unhurried grade rather than a flat plain.

The University's location, Km 1, Gboko Road, places it at the edge of Makurdi, the Benue State capital, close enough to the city's institutions to share in its infrastructure while keeping a campus of its own scale along the riverbank.

To the west, the site is bounded by the Benue Links Motor Park headquarters; to the east, by Tilley-Gyado House. Those two landmarks frame the campus along the road, with the River Benue closing it off on its far side.

Parts of the site were previously occupied by the Government Technical Training School, the Government Day Secondary School, and the Government Girls Secondary School — public schools whose grounds were absorbed into the University's campus when it was established.

Makurdi has been the Benue State capital since 1927, straddling the River Benue. On the southern bank — where the University sits — the city holds most of its government offices, medical facilities, commercial centres and transport hubs. The northern bank, across the river, is home to military installations and agricultural facilities.
